Oh, so many thoughts immediately race through my little mind:
- Three years is not enough time to prepare students. Or teachers, for that matter.
- Putting every kid through in no way promises mastery. What then?
- "[S]etting every school up for failure"? What about the CHILDREN?
- The critical thinking required for algebra is developmental; it's like mandating every child to read by age 5, or every child to walk by age 1.
- Are they planning to fund this by forcing every CA hser back into the ps system? (she said very sarcastically)

Flashback - 8th grade math. Teacher THREW book at Stephanie Mallory because she could not get the whole X thing down on our 2nd day of pre-algebra and was asking someone else what it meant.
Flashback - Dorms at Cal Poly. While lots of us were struggling our 1st year at school, those who were having problems with their general ed (upper division US History comes to mind) were either IN the teaching program OR transferred to it.
Flashback - Junior Writing Test at Cal Poly. All juniors had to write an essay with the usual 5 paragraphs - I know two people who struggled to pass the JWT well into Sr year. ALL were in the teaching program.
Something tells me that California needs to adopt much more stringent requirements for teachers before they impose more testing on students (I'd love to know how many 8th grade teachers could pass the exam).
