In the news...

This article is noteworthy as Mary is my dear cousin's daughter.

Bookwork from birth

Adriene and I are actually second cousins. We had never met (or heard of each other!), yet began our online friendship many years ago via email. I KNOW Adriene is one of a few people whom God put in my life to lead us to homeschooling, and she (somewhat reluctantly!) took on the role of supporter and encourager. She continues to inspire me with her dedication to her children's education.

It was six years ago last week (!!!) when we finally met each other in person for the first and only time. We were living in Littleton, and Adriene's family included us on one of their vacation stops. They spent a few days in town and we all spent time getting to know each other, including her wonderful husband and their four lovely children.

(I'm desperately wondering where my disks are with my old photos so I can post one here.)

Right now, we are too caught up in even more hectic lives to write as often or chat as we used to. But I continue to count Adriene as one of my closest friends and look forward to seeing her again!

Hmm...I wonder if they've ever been to Virginia...

Homeschoolers in the news

A 14 year old girl from Washington state won the National Geographic Bee today. As I read through the article, my attention was caught by the quote, "Recently, her interests have been particularly captured by Greek and Minoan pottery..." That was my first clue that she might be a homeschooler, lol.

Springs homeschooler wins geography bee

March 31, 2007 - 1:20AM

Jose (Antonio) De La Pena, a Colorado Springs homeschooler in the eighth-grade, won the Colorado Geographic Bee Friday.

As a state winner, he will compete May 22 and 23 at the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C.

He’s been there before. De La Pena won the state bee in Virginia last year and earned a trip to the national competition, said Kevin Porter, coordinator of the state bee.

To get to the state bee, students must win their school bee and score well on a written test. Porter said De La Pena competed against other homeschoolers. One hundred students competed in the state bee, held at the University of Denver.

Eight questions are asked to narrow the field to 10 finalists. Porter said seven students answered all eight questions correctly; fifteen others — including De La Pena — went through a tie-breaker to be one of finalists.

Porter said some questions are given to individual students, while others are written questions for the group. Some questions include a map.

De La Pena earned a four year scholarship to the University of Denver as winner of the state bee.

The winner of the national bee receives a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

On Friday, second place went to Garrett Mayberry, an eighth-grader at The Manning School in Golden. Third place was won by John Prose, a sixth-grader at Dennison Elementary in Lakewood.

Porter said the winning questions were:

The City of Los Angeles, located in southern California, is affected by a hot, dry wind believed to be named after a canyon through which it blows. Name the wind. (Santa Ana)

In August 2006, the city of Dire Dawa was flooded by the Dechatu River, killing about 300 people. Dire Dawa is located in which country on the Horn of Africa? (Ethiopia)

Jin Mao Tower, which has the highest hotel rooms in the world, is located in the Pudong district in which East Asian city? (Shanghai)
